Property Tax Abatement (MGL c59 §64)
Property owners who have appealed to their local assessor and are not satisfied with the result, have two choices for appeal: they may request a hearing before the State Appellate Tax Board, or they may request a hearing before the Council. Although the town assessor may require that the appeal be heard only at the state level, assessors commonly agree to hearings before the Council. Taxpayers receive a decision far more quickly, and typically with much lower (or no) legal fees, than is required for an appeal at the state level. Information about the appeal procedure is available from the Council office.
