I live in Northampton,
Massachusetts. I worked from 1989 to 2007 as a humanitarian aid
worker, mostly in Africa. I’ve done computer art since 2004.
Most of my pictures begin as digital photos. Some begin as original
art. All photos are my own. Many pictures have elements added
or subtracted, and some are joined into videos with original sound.
First I imagine
a picture, then I try to create it. Of course, the picture evolves
between its idea and execution. The computer is the canvas, where
I crop, retouch, and merge digital images, mixing and matching
existing and new elements. Most pictures grow into a series until
the original idea has been exhausted. I do not seek photorealism,
though I try to connect the final picture to the reality of its
originals. I distinguish between the photos which are the raw
material and the finished picture, but if the viewer questions
the original photos and the manner by which they were altered,
all the better. My pictures often contrast machined and organic
elements. I also employ unusual or jarring contrasts in texture,
shape, color, and focus. Sometimes I impose artificial boundaries
on my pictures, to orient them and the viewer.
One of my
concerns with printed media is the lack of depth. I experiment
with different papers and print settings to reinsert a living
texture, to make the pictures breathe. I also choose frames that
support but do not overwhelm the pictures. Similarly my videos
seek to bring photos out of their static frames. Good images evoke
emotions and convey messages. They propel social discourse and
push viewers to see people, places, objects, and events in a new
light. I hope my work achieves this.

2009: Riverside Arts

Begun in August of
2006 at Riverside Industries, an Easthampton non-profit with a
forty year history of serving adults with developmental disabilities,
Riverside Arts is among a hand full of pioneering programs seeking
to provide the opportunity for developmentally disable adults
to explore their own creativity through the arts.
We serve about seventy
five people per week in fifteen classes, working primarily with
colored pencil, oil pastel, watercolor and acrylic paints, on
paper and canvas. We allow each person’s natural inclinations
to emerge, and provide what is needed for growth and development.
Each artist
possesses a unique way of making marks, like a signature. As the
artist gains experience and confidence, the work becomes a vehicle
for sharing their heart and soul with the world.

June 2009: Dennis F. Stanton
Raised in upstate New York surrounded by nature, open fields of
corn and an abundant variety of wildlife, I found a love for photography
and showing what I saw through the lens. In high school I achieved
my first paying job with the senior portraits of my graduating
class. During my 20s I traveled to all but two states in the United
States and seven countries photographing endangered species.
I attended
Ithaca College obtaining my BFA and Rhode Island Institute of
Design achieving my MFA. This knowledge combined with degrees
in Child Psychology, Marine Biology Science and Biodiversities,
and Computer Science have only furthered my abilities to create
a diverse selection of photographs and enhanced images.
In 1987 I
did my first gallery showing at the Copley Society in Boston,
MA. It was a successful show and I enjoyed being able to share
my work with the City of Boston. I am now preparing to show my
work at the Law Library in Northampton, MA, and have applied to
the Old Courthouse Art Gallery also in Northampton, MA. I will
be presenting my portfolio to Bonni Benrubi Gallery in New York
City in February of 2009 in an effort to obtain a gallery show
there in the summer of 2009.

Art has always been a part of my life. I began formal
lessons at age 10, later continuing my art training at Providence
College, majoring in Art and Marketing. I went on to get my Masters
of Art in Teaching at Elms College. In taking art classes and
attending workshops through the years, my style has continued
to evolve.
My work reflects a renaissance in classical realism being seen
throughout contemporary artwork today. Addressing the here and
now, but with a style based upon traditional academic training.
I strive for my work to be relaxing and thereby giving the ability
to remove us from everyday stresses. The intent of my art is to
represent the natural beauty in the world.
My art has been exhibited at venues in and around New England,
having been accepted in many juried shows and winning many awards.

In recent years, my
artwork has consisted mostly of onsite landscape watercolors and
drawings, and abstract oil paintings. In both genres, I am especially
interested in atmosphere and architecture, sometimes shown in
contrast. Just a few years ago I relocated to Massachusetts, and
my landscapes have reflected the influence of this area on me.
Although my landscapes only show a slice of real life, I attempt
to capture a sense of the remaining three hundred and sixty degree
view beyond that slice through my use of color, composition, and
aesthetic decision making.
I have been highly
interested in art since I was very young, and earned my BFA in
Painting at the University of New Paltz, NY. I then completed
coursework for an MAT in Arts Education at Rhode Island College.
For the past several years I have been teaching art at the middle
school level, and have been showing my work in the northeast periodically
since I was an undergraduate. My work has been collected privately
by a variety of people, and I have been prize winner of two juried
shows.

I have been
drawing in pencil since grammar school – mainly horses and
dogs. Once in high school I started doing pencil portraits of
some of my teachers and friends (and boyfriends!). I didn’t
study art in college but opted instead for a degree in Spanish
since I learned languages easily and advising toward an art career
didn’t occur.
I took only
one or two art electives; however, through the years I kept going
back to drawing portraits with a #2 Ticonderoga pencil, being
very creative with that basic “friend” when making
shadows and texture!
Once out west
(California and Nevada), I discovered the Native American photos
taken by Edward Curtis and got “lost” in those character-filled
faces he photographed so long ago. I started reading Native American
literature and philosophy, drawing the photographs to see if I
could capture what I saw and expanding to drawings of buffalo
and wolves.
When I entered
my work in small shows, I began to get occasional commissions;
the same happened at places where I worked (had a real job!).
I was asked to draw not only grandchildren, children, and pets,
but also homes, churches, and even to paint store signs and murals.
Since living
in Massachusetts I have started inserting a little color into
the pencil work and working on black with white chalk or white
charcoal. This is a new direction for me. I’ve also begun
expanding into watercolors, hoping to do more work that is not
so detailed but more abstract or impressionistic, in which the
viewer’s eye does more of the work of “forming”
or making an “impression” of the drawing.
Good fortune
has smiled in that many people have responded wonderfully to the
drawings (commissions) I have done for them.
Thank you
for taking the time to view my work and all the work of the artists
who display here. I hope you find pleasure in what you see.
